Years ago, shortly after Skyview High School in Billings, MT started a Tri-M Music Honor Society Chapter, the students held a lunch meeting to discuss fundraising ideas and service projects. I was sitting next to a very introverted student and I suggested to her that they should sell pickles. She seemed skeptical, so I pointed out, "Everybody likes pickles, but you have to have a hook...a clever sales tactic. Perhaps you could call them 'Empathy Pickles.' If your friend is having a tough day, you could say, 'Let's go get a pickle and talk about it.'"
For two straight years, the students continued to bring up the idea and laugh about it (and at me!) Finally a student leader in the organization decided to try selling empathy pickles during homecoming week. With each pickle sale, the customer received a note card with a kind, empathetic sentiment. The students made hundreds of dollars.
The tradition continues each year at Skyview High School. We now encourage every High School (and Middle School) to start a Tri-M Music Honor Society and consider Empathy Pickles for your next fundraiser!
